Parent involvement creates partnerships, builds community within the school and gives the children a sense of connection outside the school day. Being directly involved with the social aspect of our school also provides an opportunity to view the school from a unique perspective giving the families a much deeper appreciation for how devoted the teachers are to the children and how committed the staff and administration are to their vision.
In addition to a Head of School, the Newport Montessori School has an administrative board of directors comprised of parents, teachers, and community leaders. They meet monthly providing input to the Head of School, leading various strategic planning projects, and acting as a liaison to the parents.
In an effort to encourage parent involvement, NMS has several family events planned throughout each school year. NMS hosts two family picnics & barbeques; all students and their families (siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents) are encouraged to attend. We host a Free Community Pancake Breakfast, a Science Fair Night, a Children Teach Parents Night, two open house events, family dance night, a spaghetti dinner, a kindergarten graduation, and an 8th grade graduation banquet. We invite all families (and family members) to attend these events.
NMS has an active Parent/Teachers Organization. The PTO is led by five elected parent and teacher officers who hold monthly meetings and sponsor various extracurricular events brought to our school each month which benefit all students and staff. The PTO organizes several key fundraisers throughout the school year: The Annual Bids for Kids Auction, The Sunshine 5K (in conjunction with the Newport Recreation Department), Little Lambs Cookie Dough & Cheesecake Drive, and several refreshment stand events including the Windmill 5K and Dancing with the Newport Stars. All parents/guardians of NMS students are welcome and encouraged to participate in the PTO.
"The school’s PTO is one of the most active I have ever seen. The meetings are well attended and fundraising efforts provide special program and events for all of the students to enjoy."
