Parent Involvement

Parent involvement creates partnerships, builds community within the school and gives the children a sense of connection outside the school day. Being directly involved with the school also provides an opportunity to view the school from a unique perspective giving the families a much deeper appreciation for how devoted the teachers are to the children and how committed the staff and administration are to their vision.

In addition to a director, the Newport Montessori School has an administrative board of directors comprised of parents, teachers, and community leaders. They meet quarterly providing input to the director, lead various strategic planning projects, and act as a liaison to the parents.

In an effort to encourage parent involvement, NMS has several family events planned throughout the school year. In September, we will host a family picnic day at the school on a Saturday; all students and their families (siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents) are encouraged to attend. Also in September we will provide a short, informal coffee and bagel hour for all parents on the first day of school. In mid-March parents are invited to come to school one Thursday evening for a children-teach-parents event. Finally, we will finish the year with a family picnic on the last day of school. Again we invite all families (and family members) to attend this event.

NMS has an active Parent/Teachers Organization. The PTO is led by four elected parent officers who hold monthly meetings, organize various extracurricular events including musical concerts, host weekly informal coffee hours, and assist the NMS Board of Directors with select fundraisers. All parents/guardians of NMS students are welcome and encouraged to participate in the PTO.
